HOLY CROSS LUTHERAN
CHURCH
Reno, Nevada
"Holy Cross Lutheran Church is a caring
community of active Christians.  We invite you to
share our worship and grow in Faith, Spirit, and
Fellowship."
Around the Church May 2008
CONGREGATIONAL MEETING, MAY 4
Please attend the special congregational meeting after worship on
May 4. The Council presents these items for discussion and action:
  • mortgage refinancing
  • funding of a storage shed and a piano
  • review our “Congregational Profile”

QUILTS
You are invited to help join the congregation’s quilters! This emerging
cadre of enthusiastic folks is finding great joy in creating and donating
warm, colorful, tied quilts. The next group quilting event will take place
at Holy Cross on May 14 starting at 3:30pm. Prior quilting experience
is not a prerequisite; those who know what they are doing, quilt-wise,
will be good and gracious teachers. Quilting involves many simple and
some more complex tasks; certainly you will find a role that fits your
interests and schedule.

In recent months the group has produced and donated twenty-one
quilts:
  • five quilts to the Reno Children’s Cabinet,
  • eight quilts to homeless military veterans (through the Reno
    Fire Dept.),
  • eight quilts to Lutheran World Relief for persons in the USA and
other countries who have experienced the ravages of war or
    other trauma.

These quilt-related donations also would be appreciated: a functional
portable sewing machine, fabric of any kind, sheets (especially
flannel) for the quilt’s backing, yarn, thread, and money to help defray
the costs of batting (the quilt’s insolating filler) and shipping to LWR.

HCLC YOUTH GROUP
One goal of the Youth Group is Worship. We intend to broaden our
understanding of Lutheran worship and to participate in worship more
intently. The Youth Group will lead the May 25th Sunday morning
service. If you are between the ages of 13-18 and would like assist in
this worship service, contact the
church office.  We look forward to
sharing our talents, energy and faith with the congregation as we
continue to grow in understanding of our place in the Church’s
ministry.

GODLY PLAY -- COMMENTS FROM PASTOR LARRY
Now as the 2007-08 Godly Play Sunday School year draws to a close
with the May 18 class session, I extend a deep and heartfelt “Thank
You!” on behalf of the entire congregation to the six people who have
given full attention and time to Holy Cross’s inaugural year of this
wonderful educational effort. We cannot thank you enough for your
skilled efforts, your unwavering commitment, your attention to detail,
and especially for your deep love for the children whose names fill the
growing roster of energetic, inquisitive Godly Play students. A special
note of appreciation, as well, to the anonymous donor whose
generous mid-2007 financial gift helped make Godly Play possible
here at Holy Cross.

SIMPLY GIVING®
Simply Giving® is an automated giving program designed to help you
conveniently and consistently contribute to a Lutheran congregation
or institution. Through Simply Giving®, your gifts are made through a
pre-authorized withdrawal from your bank account or credit card. You
determine the frequency of your automatic gift—weekly, semi-monthly
or monthly—the option is yours. Your gift is deposited into the
congregation’s bank account on the same day it is withdrawn from
your account—at no cost to you or the recipient. Simply Giving® is a
reliable, safe way to move your stewardship plan into action. It allows
you to share your gifts through planned giving and activates your
generosity into ongoing stewardship. Because your gift is given
consistently, you won't need to play "catch-up" at year-end or worry
about forgotten checkbooks or missed Sunday offerings. But you're
not the only one that benefits. Your congregation benefits from
steady, predictable revenues throughout the year, efficient
bookkeeping and confidence in meeting its financial commitments.
Thrivent Financial for Lutherans offers Simply Giving® to further its
mission of serving Lutheran congregations and institutions. Contact
the
church office for further information and to receive forms to utilize
this wonderful service.

SILVER SAGE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Our campus neighbor, Silver Sage Senior Apartments, offers a variety
of service opportunities to Holy Cross members and friends. Several
residents would benefit from a conversation from someone who cares.
And some residents need occasional transportation assistance. If you
are willing to offer even a bit of your time, contact the
church office
and your interest will be forwarded to their service coordinator. Your
involvement will be appreciated.

SHARED HARVEST – A PAN-LUTHERAN SOCIAL MINISTRY
Through August 24, Reno’s Lutheran congregations are invited to
supply peanut butter, small containers of jelly and tuna, juice boxes,
bar soap, and disposable diapers to assist Reno’s disadvantaged
population. Items for this effort brought to Holy Cross may be placed
under the coffee serving table. If you would like to assist in April’s
packaging and distribution, show up at 1pm, April 27, at Our Savior
Lutheran Church (LC-MS), 1900 1st St, Sparks, NV 89431 (ph 775-
358-0743).

GLOBAL HEALTH MINISTRIES
GLH is a pan-Lutheran cooperative effort that provides supplies,
funding, expertise, and in some cases, personnel, for Church-related
medical mission projects around the world. This important and crucial
work might be a way for you to key into the broader social ministry of
the Church. Check out the GHM newsletter on the congregation’s
bulletin board, ask Pastor Larry for GLB information, or access the
GLB “ghm.org” website.

PRAY-ERS
The Holy Cross Prayer Chain is a group of volunteers who
conscientiously offer those requests to the Lord. If you would like to
join this prayer ministry, call the church office (827-4822) or note your
interest on the worship attendance card; you will be added to the
phone and email list of prayer request recipients. (Prayer requests
are received by the church office and distributed to the Prayer Chair
by telephone and email.) If you would like to join this vital endeavor,
please call the
church office  or note your interest on the worship
attendance card.
